Coconut Cruise On The Belle Of
Louisville Saturday, August 2nd

The Bluegrass Classic Bowling Tournament’s annual cruise aboard the Belle of Louisville has gone south. Instead of featuring a traditional Halloween costume party, the GLBT community’s perennial cruise has been spiked with a Polynesian punch. The Miller Lite-sponsored cruise is part of the Belle of Louisville’s months-long centennial celebration.

So fasten your coconut bras and get fitted for your grass skirts for the first annual Coconut Cruise on Saturday, Aug. 2. The three-hour cruise will be Louisville’s liveliest luau on the river, complete with DJ music, dancing, raffle drawings and two tropical costume contests: one for best individual costume and another for best ensemble costume. Anyone want to wager that the cast of Gilligan’s Island might be on deck?

While a gay cruise on the Belle is an annual tradition that dates to 1984, the bowling tournament committee has hosted it for nearly 20 years, said Steve Rosenberg, tournament director. “Throughout its history, the cruise has been one of our major fundraisers for our annual bowling tournament, which is one of the country’s longest operating GLBT sporting events,” Rosenberg said.

“We wanted to keep up the traditional of an annual GLBT cruise aboard the Belle,” he said. “But we’re breathing new life into it and changing the date away from the overcrowded Halloween weekend.”

Rosenberg said that the committee pitched the idea to its major event sponsor Miller Lite and they were enthusiastic about the change and happy to pledge their ongoing financial support.

The cruise’s Polynesian focus is a spin-off of the tournament’s 2015 theme: Coconut Bowl. “In fact, we’ll be doing several activities leading up to the tournament that evolve around the theme,” the director said. “In addition to our longtime bar sponsor Tryangles, we’re reaching out to other businesses serving the GLBT community to host mutually beneficial events.”

On July 19, the committee will partner with Play Dance Club to host the Coconut Camp Show, a fun-filled evening with some of Play’s cast members performing alongside some of the committee’s members doing their campy best/worst. In addition, there will be games, drink specials and a cash raffle drawing.

Play has also agreed to allow anyone with a Coconut Cruise ticket stub free admission to Play on Aug. 2 for an after-cruise party. Caufield’s Novelty is offering a 10 percent discount on Luau-themed costumes (or any “rainbow” items) for anyone who mentions the ad on page 3 of THE COMMUNITY LETTER newspaper.

The Coconut Cruise is from 8:00 to 11:00pm. Boarding begins at 7:30 pm. For tickets or more information about the cruise or other Bluegrass Classic events, visit www.bluegrassclassic.org.
